To Do or Not To Do: Broach Bouquets

March 22, 2010

Ok, we need your opinions (expert, or not!) on a subject that has recently come up in several “wedding trends” conversations…

The Broach Bouquet – funky, passing trend OR eco-friendly, classic and lovely?

Here’s what we know:

The (often vintage) broach bouquet has been popping up on wedding blogs for at least the past few months.  It has the potential to be very cost effective (if you can raid grandma’s jewelry box), it will last forever, and has a whimsical, “little girl dress up” feel (think: crewcuts by J Crew).

It also has the potential to come off as gaudy and too DIY (who wants to look like a bedazzled bride?!).  Then there’s the issue of matching the bridal party… do bridesmaids carry broach bouquets too?  And does it have to carry over to boutonnieres in order to look cohesive?

We must know what you think!  After all, we’re in the business of making this day perfect and we simply cannot recommend something for our dear brides that their guests will walk away from scratching their heads (or worse, viciously wagging their tongues!).

What do you think – is it a Do or a Don’t You Dare?

Hi there! Thanks for your comment! The broach bouquet is something I think we’ll be seeing more and more of – even if in simple, subtle versions. I just took a peek at your website (love the pink and black!) and I love your simple, real weddings gallery. If you’re ever looking for new images let us know! We have a super gorgeous purple & peacock wedding that I think would be perfect for your site!

My sister is getting married in December and we are trying to DIY EVERYTHING! Including a monochromatic broach bouquet. In addition to broaches we are also including buttons that belonged to her grandmother as well as wired pearls and crystals. For the brides bouquets we are making traditional white rose bouquets and adding a few buttons, broaches and pearls. We are making the boys bouts with wired pearls and small metal broach like flowers. My sisters wedding will be very upscale/trendy, however i think this look would go well with a more casual out door wedding also. Honestly, if the bride loves it, who cares?

Hi Rachel! If your niece is interested, we could do one for her. Even if she’s not local {Portland} we could even ship it to her. Depending on if we also incorporate real flowers we might need to overnight the bouquet but it’s totally doable! If she’s interested, you can always have her call the shop to inquire more. I have been considering the broach bouquet for my upcoming wedding next spring. I love the look and love that I will be able to incorporate family pieces into my bouquet. It totally covers the something old category for the bride :-) Plus, there is no worries about storing or preserving the bouquet.

Wow, I guess I’m alone in the “don’t like em” category. I hear they are super heavy and frankly, I think they do border on gawdy. Next thing you know brides will be carrying their ribbon bouquets from their bridal showers.

My daughter is in love with the broach bouquet, and I have been collecting antique jewelry and broaches for the last 20 years. I cannot think of a better way to pass them down to her. It would be an amazing keepsake!
